Drosophila receptor protein tyrosine phosphatase PTP52F was found to be a new member of the subtype R3 PTPs. Its expression is highly enriched in larval midgut. We identified its indispensable role during the larva-pupa transition, suggesting that PTP52F may control the metamorphosis. This is the first report delineating a potential function of Drosophila receptor PTPs in development beyond the embryonic stage.
