To determine the mechanism of neuroprotective actions of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), we developed a neuron-rich culture model by differentiation of human neuroprogenitor cells. GLP-1 protected neurons from Abeta-induced apoptosis by activation of CREB, a transcription factor needed for cognition. As GLP-1 is known to cross blood brain barrier, currently available GLP-1-based therapies can be used to target CREB in the Alzheimer brain.
