Deep brain stimulation and monoamines.

In this study we investigated the hypothesis that DBS in the nucleus accumbens modulates the release of monoamine neurotransmitters in the prefrontal cortex. We report rapid increases of extracellular dopamine, serotonin and noradrenaline after onset of high-frequency stimulation in freely moving rats. These results provide further evidence for the distal effects of DBS.
