Enhanced expression of the Flt-1 and Flk-1 receptor tyrosine kinases in a newborn piglet model of ischemic tolerance

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and its two tyrosine kinase receptors Flt-1 and Flk-1/KDR induced by hypoxia, play a key role in angiogenesis and exert direct effects on neural tissues. We report that hypoxic-preconditioning leading to tolerance to hypoxia-ischemia induces the expression of VEGF receptors, stimulates angiogenesis and activates CREB in newborn piglet brain. These results suggest that preconditioning-induced VEGF-VEGF receptor signaling could contribute to the establishment of tolerance following cerebral hypoxia–ischemia.
