We used simple assembly models to test which FD indices provide a reliable test for increases niche complementarity with declining stress across a broad range of ecological contexts. Only one functional richness index (convex hull volume compared to random expectation) and two indices of functional divergence (quadratic entropy or trait dispersion compared to random expectation) satisfied all our selection criteria.
