We used a long-term resource manipulation experiment to determine patterns of trait diversity and phylogenetic relatedness in relation to changes in species diversity to test the idea that competitive exclusion acts on the most similar coexisting species. We found mostly a reduction in functional and phylogenetic diversity associated with species loss indicating that species more dissimilar are excluded particularly following fertilization.
