We tested if the magnitude of intraspecific variability of co-occurring species was lower than interspecific variability for a given trait by combining different approaches commonly used in functional ecology - i.e., experimental data, field observations and extraction of data from a global database. We found that interspecific variability was greater than intraspecific variability and species ranking was conserved across different datasets and spatial scales.
