Most Mediterranean dwarf shrubs show species-specific distinct growth rings and were found to be suitable for age-structure analyses of phrygana. Factors controlling beta-diversity and species composition of East Mediterranean dwarf shrublands were altitudinal and edaphic. Phrygana shrubs at higher elevations are older than those at low elevations, perhaps a general principle in plant ecology.
