Biodiversity and ecosystem function studies have traditionally classified grassland species into grasses, forbs and legumes. We offer a new method that statistically groups plant species based upon functional effects traits that relate to the ecosystem functions of interest. This allows specific hypotheses to be formulated. The effectiveness of this method is illustrated with a worked example from a grassland experiment.
