Differences in postfire tree seedling density and shrub cover among forest stands increased from one to 14 yr following severe fire in a serotinous conifer (Pinus muricata) forest, suggesting divergent successional pathways of stand development. Early heterogeneity of vegetation establishment set the course for variability in stand structure in mid-seral stages and may persist into later stages.
