Occurrence of isolated perennial grass and succulent shrub patches at the ecotone between the arid Bushmanland grassland and the Namaqualand shrubland are maintained by competition between the two growth forms. Strong competition from adult grass plants on shrub seedlings, override the effects of environmental factors that tend to overlap at ecotonal regions.
