The explanation of the coexistence and distribution patterns in tropical forests is controversial due to the highly variable results in plant- habitat association studies. Here, we determine how species-specific spatial aggregation characteristics and sampling scale affect the outcome of these studies. Using distribution maps of canopy-statured individuals, to evaluate patterns of habitat association in five tree species.
