A bryophyte transplant experiment was conducted in spruce-dominated forests. We investigated if the mortality of bryophytes associated with litter burial varies with species and microsite shelter on the forest floor. We observed a large effect of litter burial on mortality of prostrate-growing liverworts at sheltered microsites (boulders and tree bases). Erect-growing moss species exhibited low mortality at all microsites.
