To what extent community-level variability in species function is driven by phylogenetic history has rarely been explored in terms of composition and diversity. Here we tested if differences in community functional composition/diversity along a sea-inland environmental gradient on Italian coasts mirror differences in phylogenetic structure. We found that phylogeny could only partially capture the turnover in functional community structure.
