A spherical inorganic material combined with its organic capping can be considered as a nanohybrid with properties that differ from those of the individual components. The symbiotic effect arise from the possibility of placing a high local concentration of a functional group on the NP surface, the potential incorporation of simultaneous functionalities on the NP capping, the high encapsulating capacity of the nanohybrid, the capacity of the ligand to produce an efficient interdigitation of amphiphilic molecules, the potential of the ligand to be used for establish specific interactions, among others. Several examples of the application of this cooperative action are presented.
