Abstract

The crystallization of membrane proteins is described. The topics covered include the principles of membrane‐protein crystallization, general properties of detergents relevant to membrane‐protein crystallization, the ‘small amphiphile concept’, membrane‐protein crystallization with the help of antibody Fv fragments and membrane‐protein crystallization using cubic bicontinuous lipidic phases. General recommendations on crystallizing membrane proteins are provided, and membrane proteins with known structures and potentially useful detergents are tabulated.
