Hippocampus Editorial Board Members Awarded NOBEL PRIZE
The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet awarded the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine jointly to Professors John O’Keefe, May-Britt Moser, and Edvard I. Moser for their discoveries of cells that constitute a positioning system in the brain – an “inner GPS” that makes it possible to orient ourselves in space, to know where we are, to find our way from one place to another. All three laureates are Editorial Board Members of Hippocampus.

The case study of Patient H.M. was an exemplar of how brain damage can teach us about the anatomical division of labor within the brain. After having the hippocampus removed from both hemispheres to treat epilepsy, he was left unable to form memories. The authors of this study review the unique dataset obtained from the in-depth autopsy after his death in 2008 including in vivo, in situ, and ex vivo high – resolution MRI data.
