Two luminaries of modern polymer science, Professors E. W. (Bert) Meijer and David A. Tirrell will receive the 2011 International Award of the Society of Polymer Science, Japan (SPSJ), as recently announced by SPSJ, for "development of supramolecular polymers and supramolecular polymer chemistry" (Meijer) and "development of new biological polymerization by genetic control" (Tirrell). To our great pleasure and honor, Bert Meijer, Professor, Technical University of Eindhoven, the Netherlands, is one of the current Editors of the Journal of Polymer Science, Part A: Polymer Chemistry, and Dave Tirrell, California Institute of Technology, U. S. A., is a former Editor and a current Advisory Editor of JPS.

Founded in December 1951, SPSJ is one of the largest and oldest polymer science and technology societies in the world, representing the 12,000 member strong, Japanese polymer community. Activities include the spring Annual Meeting, the fall Macromolecular Symposium, the SPSJ International Polymer Conference (IPC), publication of Polymer Journal and Kobunshi (High Polymers), webinars, and a series of awards (visit http://www.spsj.or.jp/english- index.htm).

The SPSJ International Award, established in 1994, is the highest recognition of the society for international colleagues 55 or above. The award is for significant contributions to progress in polymer science and technology as well as to recognize international activities related to SPSJ. Usually a maximum of three recipients are selected by the award committee chaired by the SPSJ President. Along with Bert and Dave, Professor Andre Persoons (Catholic University Leuven, Belgium) will receive the 2011 award. As a proud partner of SPSJ, the Journal of Polymer Science, Part A: Polymer Chemistry recognizes recent awardees from our Editorial and Advisory Board members. These include A. Deffieux, C. C. Han, and K. Matyjaszewski (2010); H. Berghmans, D. J. Liaw, and T. P. Lodge (2009); and J. M. J. Fréchet, K. Müllen, and Y. Yagci (2008). Virgil Percec, Editor, received the award in 2008.

By SPSJ's invitation, Bert Meijer and Dave Tirrell will be attending the 61st SPSJ Annual Meeting, May 29th to 31st, 2012 in Yokohama, Japan, to receive the awards at the General Assembly and present award addresses. They are also invited to the Commemorative Symposium Celebrating the 60th Anniversary of SPSJ, immediately preceding the annual meeting. Congratulations, Bert and Dave!
