2014_16/2014Copper Complexes of N-Donor Ligands as Artificial Nucleases (Eur. J. Inorg. Chem. 16/2014)

The cover picture shows metal complexes capable of cleaving DNA, so-called artificial metallonucleases. The DNA-cleaving agents presented in the Microreview by N. Kulak et al. on p. 2597 ff. are based on copper as the central atom and comprise N-donor ligands. Heteroaromatic, macrocyclic, and peptidic ligand systems (adumbrated in the background) are covered in detail. Whereas the focus of the Microreview is on the coordination chemistry of these artificial nucleases and the mechanism of DNA cleavage, potential applications in medicine and molecular biology are also briefly discussed. For more on the story behind the cover research, see the Cover Profile.
