03/2000The cover picture shows the backbone structure of a polyfluorene molecule, which represents a new era of semiconducting polymers suitable for display applications. Among the various types of conjugated polymers, the class of polyfluorenes has recently attracted much interest as blue-light emitters in organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) and particularly proven to be successfully applied in polarized light-emitting devices (PLEDs). The upper inset depicts a general scheme of the relaxation processes of optically generated excitations within the inhomogeneously broadened density of states (DOS) in such conjugated systems. The lower inset illustrates the anisotropy both in absorption and photoluminescence of an aligned polyfluorene sample. The background is taken from a micrograph (crossed polarizers) of a sheared and successively annealed polyfluorene film nicely pointing out the visible monodomains. Further details are given in the communication by Bauer et al. on pages 142–146.
