The cover picture shows the operation of a fuel cell stack. The established technology of combining air and fuel in an electrochemical cell to produce electricity has become an engineering challenge to produce economically viable and ecological systems. The progress from single fuel cells over stacks, modules, and integrated systems to power plants can be visualised for each important step in fuel cell history. The correct combination of the individual components, the integration of fuel processing, as well as a glance at the background of the cell reactions all form important steps in the understanding of fuel cell technology.
