The cover picture shows the jumps of the calculated contact angle on a chemically patterned anisotropic surface as a function of surface energy (top). The surface was prepared from a dipalmitoyl phospholipide by the Langmuir–Blodgett technique and the resulting monolayer on the mica substrate was characterised by atomic force microscopy (bottom). Such nanostructured substrates are considered the first step towards microfluidic devices potentially important to chemistry, physics and biology.
