The cover picture shows a snapshot of an ensemble of model elongated and tapered molecules with an average orientational correlation leading to polar–nematic order (the particles are colour coded according to their direction with respect to the laboratory z-axis). Such a system was designed to study the combined effects of a steric dipole with an apolar or polar interaction anisotropy to determine if a ferroelectric fluid phase may be obtained. A key ingredient for a polar phase is a suitable balance of shape and attractive terms; a combination of noncentrosymmetric shape and attractive forces seems to point the way to a successful candidate for a ferroelectric nematic phase.
