Cover Picture: Nanoscale Organization of the Pathogen Receptor DC-SIGN Mapped by Single-Molecule High-Resolution Fluorescence Microscopy (ChemPhysChem 10/2007)
The cover picture shows a high-resolution fluorescence image (12×7 μm2) of the pathogen recognition receptor DC-SIGN expressed on the membrane of an immature dendritic cell. Simultaneously the topography (gray) and the fluorescence (color) image have been obtained using near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM; lower left panel). Because spatial resolution and single-molecule detection sensitivity are increased, NSOM is capable to resolve individual domains of DC-SIGN of typically 185 nm in size that are randomly distributed over the whole cell membrane (lower right panel).
