Cover Picture: Observation of Noise-Triggered Chaotic Emissions in an NMR-Maser (ChemPhysChem 10/2008)
The cover picture illustrates the observation of multiple chaotic maser emissions in NMR. In their article on page 1395, Marion et al. show that dissolved 129Xe—in which the nuclear magnetization enhanced by optical pumping (apparatus shown in background, credit Stropa/CEA) is anti-aligned with the static magnetic field—is able to emit spontaneously a series of rf bursts of very narrow frequency linewidth. This dynamic behavior is associated with the appearance of spatial modes of the xenon magnetization.
