Cover Picture: Rational Design of Ag/TiO2 Nanosystems by a Combined RF-Sputtering/Sol-Gel Approach (ChemPhysChem 18/2009)
The cover picture shows transmission electron microscopy images of Ag/TiO2 nanocomposite layers prepared by an original combination of sol–gel and sputtering techniques. The cross-section colour map in the upper part of the figure shows as-grown silver nanoparticles distributed on the titania matrix. The bottom part of the cover displays the zero-loss filtered plane-view image of the same sample after annealing in air at 600 °C. On p. 3249, A. Gasparotto et al. demonstrate how composition, structure, morphology and optical properties of the Ag/TiO2 composites can be finely tuned as a function of synthesis and treatment conditions that influence the system functional performances. The overlay sketches how these nanosystems photocatalytically decompose organic pollutants even under solar light irradiation.
