Material composed of graphene on a Au(111) surface that can stably adsorb carbon-based rings in biomolecules and has excellent conductivity is proposed and demonstrated by C. Fan, H. Fang et al. on p. 585. By using this material as the substrate, the signal-to-noise ratio is greatly enhanced, so that different nucleobases can be clearly distinguishable.
