The background of the cover picture shows an artistic representation of a nanoparticle suspension containing serum albumin molecules. Left insert: schematic representation of the equilibrium between free and surface-bound protein in the interaction process between a nanoparticle and a protein. Middle insert: size distribution of a citrate stabilized silver nanoparticle suspension experimentally determined from the Brownian motion pathways of individual nanoparticles. Right insert: measured dependence of the free protein content in a suspension containing nanoparticles on the total nanoparticle surface area present (comparison of citrate stabilized silver and gold nanoparticles). The picture is based on the article by L. Treuel et al. on p. 3093.
