12_01/2011Cover Picture: Quantification of Photosensitized Singlet Oxygen Production by a Fluorescent Protein (ChemPhysChem 1/2011)

The picture shows the red fluorescent protein TagRFP, which is able to photosensitize singlet oxygen, with an estimated quantum yield of ΦΔ≈0.004, as described by S. Nonell, C. Flors et al. on p. 161. This is the first estimation of a ΦΔ value for a GFP-like protein. Moreover, the short triplet lifetime of TagRFP suggests relatively high oxygen accessibility to the chromophore compared to other fluorescent proteins. These results have implications in improving fluorescent proteins for fluorescence microscopy and chromophore-assisted laser inactivation.
