Intensity fluctuations of individual fluorophores, also termed blinking, are studied at the single-molecule level by T. Cordes, P. Tinnefeld et al. on p. 931. Therefore, dye molecules of the homologous series of cyanines were immobilized through double-stranded DNA on BSA-coated cover slips.
