L F Richardson Award Prize Winners
The L F Richardson Prize is awarded annually by the Royal Meteorological Society for an outstanding paper published in the preceding four years in the Quarterly Journal, International Journal of Climatology, Meteorological Applications or Atmospheric Science Letters by a member of the Society who was under the age of 35 at the time of submission.
2011 Helen Wells
Since 2008 Dr Helen Wells has led a series of very strong papers published in the Quarterly Journal on the subject of mountain waves and their representation in numerical models. The papers address a range of complex and challenging issues including the effects of variations in the background flow, the effects of nonlinearity of the wave field, and the effects of upstream mountains on the drag associated with downstream mountains. These issues are studied using a combination of theoretical analysis, numerical modelling, and comparison with observational data. Particularly important is her April 2011 paper, which highlights the importance of the horizontal propagation of gravity wave packets, an effect that is neglected in all current numerical model parameterization schemes for gravity wave drag. The outstanding nature of this work is recognized through the award of the Society's L F Richardson Prize.
