Cover Picture

01/2000The cover picture shows the Tsete fly feeding. It is the transmitter of Trypanosoma brucei, a protozoan parasite that causes sleeping sickness, which is a life-threatening disease in tropical Africa. The blood, depicted below the fly, contains the unicellar parasites (in purple), which circumvent the host's immune respond by virtue of a dense protein coat. This protein coat consists of variant surface glyoproteins (VSG), which are attached to the cell membrane through glycosylphosphatidylinisitol (GPI) anchors shown in blue. Ley et al. have developed new methods for the efficient synthesis of complex carbohydrates such as the shown GPI anchor. More information is iven in their article on p. 172ff. (The authors are grateful to John Holman and Nathan Pitt, University of Cambridge for generating the cover picture, to Prof. L. Jenni, University of Basel (Switzerland) for kindly providing a picture of a Tsetse fly. and to Prof. M. Duszenko, University of Tübingen and "Eye of Science", Reutlingen (both Germany) for the right to reproduce parts of their T. brucei/blood cell picture.)
