07/2000The cover picture shows schematically the spatial arrangement of supramolecular dendrimers that consist of cone-shaped 3,4,5,nGi-X building blocks of generation i=1, 2, and 3. Each building block, for example, triethyleneglycol[3,4,5-tris{3',4',5'-tris(n-dodecane-1-yloxy)benzyloxy}benzoate] [(3,4,5)2-12-G2-CO-(OCH2CH2)3OH], contains a largely aromatic dendritic core terminated with aliphatic chains. The monodendron building blocks assemble into spehrical supramolecular dendrimers, which, in turn, pack in a cubic lattice. The small blue spheres represent the highest density aromatic regions and the regions enclosed within the white/yellow spehres are dominated by chain ends. The size of the spherical aggregates can be controlled by the generation number, chain length and the size of group X. Due to conformational change, the dendrimers display a strongly negative temperature expansion coefficient of the unit cell and, in some cases, a thermally induced column–sphere transition.
