The cover shows the principle of a purely organic molecular light converter. The excitation spectra of the compound shown clearly reveal that the emission intensity of the tetraphenylporphyrinyl (TPP) terminal group at 665 nm (carmine red) depends on the wavelength of excitation and exhibits a maximum upon excitation with 256-nm light; the absorption maximum of the anthryl moiety is found at this wavelength. No TPP emission occurs upon excitation in the region of polyene absorption. Following selective excitation of the anthryl moiety with UV light, energy is transferred through the polyene chain and reemitted by the TPP moiety. It is hoped that such studies will afford insight into the mechanisms of energy transfer in biological and abiological systems. Further details are given by F. Effenberger, H. C.
