The cover picture shows a perspective view of terprenin by X-ray crystallographic analysis together with a micrograph of Aspergiltus candidus that produces terprenin. This novel natural product has a highly oxygenated p-terphenyl skeleton with a prenyloxy side chain. Terprenin is a highly potent IgE antibody suppressant; 104 times more potent than FK506 and effective in vivo with no toxicological signs. A highly efficient and practical total synthesis of this important natural product offers promise for the development of a new type of antiallergic drug as well as the clarification of its interesting mechanism of action. More about the biological activities and total syntheses of terprenin is reported by K. Kawada and M. Ohtani et al. on pages 973–975.
