The cover picture shows a novel bone implant which is coated with highly active and selective integrin ligands. Bone-forming osteoblasts bind through αvβ3 as well as αvβ5 integrins—a class of adhesion receptors at the cell surface—to the implant coating, where they are stimulated to proliferate and form a stable interface between implant and adjoining tissue. Thus a direct contact to the tissue is established. Further details on this novel coating technique are described by Kessler et al. on pages 560–562.
