The cover picture shows schematically the osmium-catalyzed dihydroxylation of 1-octene in the presence of oxygen as oxidant. According to measurements, one mole of oxygen and two moles of water react with two moles of 1-octene: Interestingly, both oxygen atoms of molecular oxygen are used productively under mild conditions in the oxidation of the alkene. The panorama of the Baltic Sea in the background and the Warnemünde lighthouse indicate where this reaction was discovered and suggest that valuable, virtually by-product-free intermediates and bulk chemicals are accessible.
