The cover picture shows the X-ray structure of octanitrocubane in the center. The intermediates that have played an important role in the first successful synthesis of this compound are arranged round it. Octanitrocubane may well prove to be the most powerful. nonnuclear, shock-insensitive explosive yet made—the background photo, however, shows the detonation of a more conventional compound. Further details of the synthesis and properties of octanitrocubane are reported by M.-X. Zhang, P. E. Eaton, and R. Gilardi on pages 401–404.
