39_05/2000The cover picture shows a model compound for codon – anticodon interaction according to the pairing region (circular sector, left) of the tRNAPhe anticodon GAA (blue) and the cognate mRNA codon UUC (red). Its characteristic feature is the covalent bridging of the corresponding nucleotide sequences by oligoethylene glycol units. The resulting stabilization is predominantly of entropic origin and enables the determination of thermodynamic parameters for the formation of very short strands of double helical RNA. With respect to codon-anticodon pairing. the influence of nearby nucleotides by base stacking is quantifiable: the modified tRNA–purine bases at position 37 (cyan) are particularly involved. Further details are reported by R. Micura et al. on p. 922 ff.
