This week's catch is an unprecedented aluminum compound of the form [LAl(OH)2], prepared via the hydrolysis of [LAlI2] in a two-phase toluene/liquid ammonia system. The solid-state structure reveals a weakly hydrogen-bonded dimer; electrostatic potential analysis indicates that electrophilic attack at the oxygen sites is preferred, and that π-electron density is increased upon formation of the dimer.
