The “figure-eight” cyclooctapyrrole octaphyrin-(126.96.36.199.188.8.131.52), a compound susceptible to versatile functionalization, opens a pathway to the first dispirodiporphyrinoid obtained as a binuclear nickel complex. The stage for this transformation is set by the regioselective oxidation of octaphyrin to give the diketo derivative shown in the background. Nickel ions initiate a reaction cascade with the diketone, which leads to the nickel complex of spirodicorrole. For more information see the communication by E. Vogel and K. N.
