In the beginning the origin of life involved a series of homochiral chemical reactions. Some of these may have involved serine and its homochiral octamer, as shown. Many of these reactions occur in a chirally selective fashion. The chiral exchange reactions favor the enantiomers present in modern life (l-amino acids, d-sugars).
