Raphael's “Mass of Bolsena” depicts the “miracle” that occurred in the small Italian village of Bolsena north of Rome in 1263. The cover picture shows part of the fresco, in which a “bleeding” host is the center of attention. Today we know that such phenomena, which could only be explained as a miracle in the Middle Ages, are caused by prodigiosin-producing bacteria. With an emphasis on the total synthesis, A. Fürstner summarizes the chemistry and biology of these “prodigious” compounds in his Review on page 3582 ff.
