A clever trick to change the substrate specificity of hydrogen peroxide dependent cytochrome P450 (P450BSβ) without replacing any amino acid residues is described by Y. Watanabe and co-workers in their Communication on page 3656 ff. Substrate misrecognition is induced by a decoy molecule with a structure similar to that of the natural substrate. Several oxidation reactions of nonnatural substrates, such as the hydroxylation of ethylbenzene, are demonstrated with this system.
