46_42b/2007Inside Cover: Chemical Defense of the Crust Fungus Aleurodiscus amorphus by a Tailor-Made Cyanogenic Cyanohydrin Ether (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 42/2007)

Upon injury of the fruiting bodies the fungus Aleurodiscus amorphus releases hydrocyanic acid from a tailor-made cyanogenic cyanohydrin ether by an oxidative mechanism so far unknown in nature. This is described by P. Spiteller and B. L. J. Kindler in their Communication on p. 8076 ff. The inside cover shows the basic principle of the chemical defense reaction of the pinhead-sized fruiting bodies and illustrates how predators are deterred by the release of HCN.
