A synthetic ion channel based on a metal–organic polyhedron (MOP) is described by K. Kim and co-workers in the Communication on page 5755 ff. The MOP transports protons and alkali metal ions across lipid membranes with cation selectivity in the order of Li+≫Na+>K+>Rb+>Cs+. Cation–π interactions between cations and the aromatic rings lining the windows of the MOP seem to play a crucial role in ion transport.
