Controlled molecular valves for sealed nanocontainers are of interest for targeted drug delivery and self-healing polymers. In their Communication on page 4734 ff., T. Bein and co-workers present a DNA-based valve system for colloidal silica that has a precisely programmable opening temperature. This nanodevice consists of a mesoporous silica host, functionalization of the pore mouths with a DNA linker, and biotin–avidin coupling for valve closure.
