Metal boride nanocrystals can be conveniently synthesized through a solution route, as shown by D. Portehault and co-workers in their Communication on page 3262 ff. A one-pot ionothermal process under relatively mild conditions (500–900 °C) yields a wide range of structures, from extended 3D (MB6, MB4), 2D (MB2), and 1D (MB) boron frameworks to cluster-like compounds (M2B). The typical versatility of a solution route enables adjustment of the particle size and leads to a wide range of functional nanomaterials.
