using a synthetic C4-modified mannosamine derivative provides previously inaccessible C7 modifications of sialic acids in living cells. In their Communication on page 5986 ff., S. Hinderlich, C. P. R. Hackenberger et al. also show that their synthetic mannosamine derivative could label membrane-associated glycoproteins of live animals. The picture shows the “machinery” that converts the new mannosamine compound into sialic acid and transports it to glycoproteins on the cell surface (© O'Reilly Science Art).
