Cover: The response of a polymer chain to a constant force dragging it along an homogeneous surface is near-linear, with a smooth motion. Molecular dynamics simulations of flexible polymer chains on heterogeneous surfaces show how this response becomes non-linear (discontinuous stick-slip motion) if even moderately attractive sites exist on the surface. Apparently weak energetic disorder can produce significant changes of the chain statistics, equilibrium dynamics, and non-equilibrium response to a horizontal pulling force.
